You can read a detailed analysis of the film for allusions contained in it here.
The film Officer and Spy (2019) talks about the trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, allegedly convicted of espionage in favor of Germany at the end of the 19th century. On September 24, 1894, French intelligence was able to intercept the cover letter to the address of the military attache of Germany von Charskoppen; The assistant to the head of the intelligence, Major Henry, accused the interpretation of the internship at the General Staff, Jew Alfred Dreyfus. The rapid investigation and hearing, which took place during closed doors, ended with the fact that on December 22, drifus was found guilty, devoid of all titles and sentenced to life imprisonment. The case, however, did not end there, gaining a resonance thanks, among others, to Colonel Georges Picaru (who found the similarity of the handwriting of the scammer with the handwriting of the true culprit of Major Estherkhazi), the writer Bernard Lazaru, the vice-chairman of the Senate Auguste Sherer-Kestner and, finally, the writer Emil Zola, who actually completed the split of the Third Republic into two camps with his open letter to President Felix Fead “J'Accuse”.
In the film of Roman Polanskoye, the emphasis was transferred to the second part of the process, when the head of the intelligence department Georges Picicar finds evidence that refutes the guilt of drifus, and begins his own investigation. The precedent itself with the case was so loud and sensational that even then the nascent cinema did not stand aside. In 1899 (when the trial has not yet been completed), Georges Meles shoots a series of short gaming plots that staging important stages of the process. Among them, for example, the arrest of drifus, tightening the conditions for concluding on a damn island, an attempt on Fernan Labori. In order not to fall into a historiographical analysis, I will probably stop and turn directly to the analysis of the film.
The film precedes the classic for the genre “based on real events”, subconsciously programming the viewer on the conviction of the accuracy and reliability of the events transferred to the screen. The very history of the trial begins with the civil execution of Alfred Dreyfus. In it, the viewer presented the exposition of the main characters of the film – Dreyfus himself (Louis Garrel), a kind of symbol of an unfairly convicted innocent victim, and the future fighter for the truth, the newly recognized head of the intelligence department of Georges Picar (Jean Dyuzharden).DA_ZDRAVSTVUET_SUD_MAD_TOSBY
